Abstract

A commitment to an ongoing book study group would mean a shift from the traditional “one and done” workshop model. Participation in book study groups requires a significant time commitment to both read the book and attend the discussion sessions. Post-session conversations helped nurture such changes, as it was not uncommon for a subset of the teachers to linger after the designated book study group time and continue to engage in conversation about their practice. The group particularly emphasized their commitment to evaluate and implement specific instructional practices based on the needs of their students. Most of those who left the group moved away for new jobs or to join family and the geographic distance made it too difficult to maintain a continued commitment to the book club. The shared experiences of members who were previously Master of Arts in Teaching students may have helped create that ethos for the group.
