Radiochemical Health Effects Archives is one of 39 environmental and peace organizations that won a landmark lawsuit against the U.S Department of Energy for failure to follow-through on adequate environmental cleanup during its 50+ years of nuclear weapons research, testing, and production. Part of this settlement was the establishment of the MTA Fund (Citizens’ Monitoring and Technical Assessment Fund), which provided $6.25 million for tribes and non-profit organizations to assess and conduct independent technical and scientific studies regarding the multitude of technical, ecological, and health issues surrounding the nation’s nuclear weapons complex.
Clark University was chosen by the non-profit peace and environmental groups as the conservator of these reports to ensure they remain available to the public in perpetuity. The unconventional election of university as conservator is an innovative example, particularly within the era of Web 1.0, of higher education as protector and provider of information through wide dissemination.
The research and reports available in this series were conducted by the Radiochemical Health Effects Archives with their allocated portion of the MTA fund.

Thyroid Doses and Risk of Thyroid Cancer from Exposure to I-131 from the Nevada Test Site

This report provides a set of look-up tables of representative thyroid doses and risks of thyroid cancer for individuals exposed to I-131 in fallout from nuclear weapons testing at the Nevada Test Site. These tables are intended to be used by people who do not have access to a computer. The look-up tables contain estimates of doses and risks for eight representative birth cohorts and sixty-seven locations in eight regions around the continental United States. They were obtained using a slightly modified version of the NCI’s online dose and risk calculator for exposures to I-131 in NTS fallout.
The look-up tables provided here do not cover all possible exposure situations, but they can be used to estimate the general magnitude of a person’s thyroid dose and risk of thyroid cancer from NTS fallout according to birth cohort, gender, given residence history, and given amount and type of milk consumed.

Thyroid Doses and Risk of Thyroid Cancer For Members of Public Exposed to I-131
Radiochemical Health Effects Archives and SENES Oak Ridge, Inc.
The purpose of this report is to estimate radiation doses to the thyroid gland and risk of thyroid cancer incidence for individuals exposed to I-131 in fallout from nuclear weapons tested at the Nevada Test Site (NTS) and in releases from different nuclear facilities operated in the United States. Estimates are produced for individuals living around Oak Ridge, Tennessee, who were exposed both to I-131 from NTS fallout and to I-131 released from the X-10 nuclear facility; for individuals living around Hanford, Washington, who were exposed both to I-131 from NTS fallout and to I-131 released from the Hanford facility; and for individuals living in other regions of the country where they were exposed only to I-131 from NTS fallout. Individuals in the latter group lived mostly in areas of Utah, Montana, and Idaho, where deposition of I-131 is known to have been larger than average deposition across the U.S.
