Description
Mary Ellen Krober grew up in Perth-Amboy, New Jersey. In high school, she participated in a multitude of extracurricular activities, including working as a stagehand, writing for the school newspaper, and playing sports. When it came time to think about college, Mary Ellen’s decision process was unique. She did not have many people to turn to for advice as she would be the first in her family to attend college. More importantly, few schools were open to women. Clark was one of the exceptions. In her interview, Mary Ellen shares the winding path she took to find the right major and her involvement in the Women’s Athletic Association during a time when Clark did not allow women the same opportunities in team sports as men. She also describes her social life, including her experiences at some of Clark’s most famous concerts featuring Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, and Janis Joplin. After graduating from Clark in 1969, Mary Ellen went on to practice law in the public sector until her retirement. Yet for her, Clark was not only a place where she acquired the skills necessary to advance her career, but also a place that fostered new experiences and lifelong friendships.
