Abstract and Research Question
Research Question: What are local perceptions of healthy food and its accessibility?
Abstract: This research explored the influence of physical barriers in determining access to healthy foods in food deserts, such as Worcester. Information was collected through informal interviews and surveys with shoppers at grocery and convenience stores surrounding the Webster Square food desert. The responses from customers showed that the type of food available at a store was the most important factor in determining where they shop, and availability of transportation was least important. Overall, consumer food purchasing decisions were influenced by personal and structural factors.
