Description

Photograph taken by Charles Lindbergh of (left to right) Nils T. Ljungquist, Robert Goddard, Esther Goddard, Albert Kisk, and Harry Guggenheim at the launching tower, September 23 1935. This section of Esther's photo album is titled 'A Series of Ten Photographs Taken By Charles A. Lindbergh On Occasion of His Visit to Roswell with Harry F. Guggenheim, September 23, 1935'.

All of Goddard's grant-funded research in Roswell, New Mexico came from the Guggenheim Foundation. Goddard's friendships with Harry (and before him, Daniel) Guggenheim and Charles Lindbergh were what made Goddard's rocketry research financially possible. Goddard and Lindbergh first met back in 1929 and became good friends. In his book Rocket Man: Robert H. Goddard and the Birth of the Space Age, David A. Clary concludes that Goddard's ability to gain annual funding for eight consecutive years in Roswell between 1934-1942 had far more to do with Lindbergh's influence with Guggenheim than Goddard's accomplishments during that time.

Lindbergh flew in on September 22, 1935, accompanied by Harry and Carol Guggenheim, to a flurry of press and security. The purpose of this visit was to show Guggenheim that Goddard deserved a second year of funding in Roswell. Between unfit weather and unsuccessful tests, the visit did not yield a flight demonstration. These tests would be 'A11' and 'A12' in the 'A' series of tests and can be seen between 10:21 and 10:59 on Reel 5 of The Goddard Rocket Film Reels.

From September 1934 through October 1935, Robert Goddard and his crew conducted what they named their 'A' series of tests in Roswell, New Mexico. The 'A' series of tests used simple pressure feed, gyroscopic control using vanes, and parachutes.

'The Goddard Rocket Researches: A Photographic Record' is an annotated photo album covering Robert H. Goddard's work and experimentation with rocketry. It was assembled and curated by Esther Goddard sometime after her husband's passing in 1945. Additionally, almost all of the photographs were taken by Esther herself.

Photographs were scanned at 400dpi.
