Sheared Dense Granular Flows

Abstract
This chapter reviews 3D sheared granular flows in simple laboratory systems. The review is confined to flow of particles that are monodisperse in size, shape, and density to avoid complexities induced by segregation dynamics (which are covered in detail in Chapter 10). We further focus on the slow flow regime where the particles (essentially) remain in contact, as opposed to the kinetic regime where particles are agitated significantly and undergo binary collisions. Kinetic theory approaches have been well developed in the latter regime [1]; a review of kinetic theory is found in Chapter 4.
