Abstract
This chapter discusses the case of Sri Lanka, which caught worldwide attention in 2022 due to an unprecedented mass uprising that took place for months amid a severe economic meltdown while the country was declared bankrupt. It scrutinizes the period leading to this dramatic turn of events in Sri Lanka, with a particular focus on the evolution of civil society organizations, investigating whether early signs of discontent and defiance were reflected in the realm of civil society organizations and beyond during the years preceding the so-called struggle, the aragalaya, the Sinhalese term used to denote the uprising in 2022.
