The majority of American colleges and universities founded before the 20th century were created as part of the founding and development of local communities. If we ignore the relationship between higher education institutions and their communities, we miss crucial parts of the history of both. The arc of this story changes dramatically after World War II, when many changes combined to create inevitable conflict of many sorts between higher education institutions and their communities. This lecture traces that arc from synergy to synergistic conflict
Virginia Sapiro’72 is Professor Emerita of Political Science at the University of Wisconsin – Madison and Dean of Emerita of Arts & Sciences at Boston University. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences and a former member of the Clark University Board of Trustees.
