Abstract
The esports industry has experienced remarkable growth in recent years, evolving into a multi-billion-dollar sector with a global audience. This rapid expansion requires effective public relations (PR), communications, and crisis management strategies to navigate challenges and opportunities. This chapter overviews esports PR and effective communication within the esports industry. A review of esports PR and relevant stakeholders is presented, which consists of an array of constituents including, esports investors, companies, owners, game makers, players, consumers, and just about everyone else in between. PR, communications, and the role of crisis management professionals in esports are examined using best practices and highlighting essential skills and ethical considerations. The analysis of real-world examples, case studies, and future trends provides valuable insight into the industry's dynamic nature. Ultimately, this chapter aims to equip aspiring esports professionals and enthusiasts with the knowledge and resources necessary to excel in their careers and contribute to the continued growth and success of the industry. Key highlights include: (1) foundations of esports PR; (2) crisis intervention and challenges for esports PR; (3) recommendations for esports PR; (4) highlights regarding the digital nature of esports and related common PR issues; and (5) social media and esports PR recommendations.
