Orderly Books of the 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment, 1778-1780

Orderly Books of the 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment, 1778-1780

Clark University's Archives & Special Collections holds eight Orderly Books of the command of Captain Thomas Lloyd Moore of the 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment serving under Brigadier "Mad" Anthony Wayne. Under its Commander-in-Chief George Washington, the Revolutionary War Continental Army spent the bitter Winter of 1777 into 1778 at Valley Forge. The first orderly book begins April 14, 1778, in the latter half of that six-month encampment and ends December 18, 1780 (Headquarters, Mount Kemble, near Morristown, New Jersey). These books contain a day-by-day account of orders, court martials, guard duty, and other events, and are similar to what the U.S Navy calls the "rough log".

These orderly books were written by many hands, and between the variables of age, ink, and handwriting, each page has its own visual character. These have never been published and constitute eight out of the ten orderly books still in existence from the 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment.

These materials were among the contents of Dr. William Libbey's library, which was donated to Clark University in 1928 following his passing. Libbey was Professor of physical geography and director of the Museum of Geology and Archeology at Princeton University. He was very active in the New Jersey Society, Sons of the American Revolution. Although none of his ancestors were in the 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment, he may have acquired the orderly books as an active leader in the SAR.

With the exception of portions from the first book, these materials have not been transcribed.

These materials were photographed at 400 dpi and have been copied and migrated to pdf format for repository presentation. File compression in very minor loss of granularity.

    3rd Pennsylvania Regiment

Clark University's Archives & Special Collections holds eight Orderly Books of the command of Captain Thomas Lloyd Moore of the 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment serving under Brigadier "Mad" Anthony Wayne. The first orderly book begins April 14, 1778 and ends in late July 1778. These books contain a day-by-day account of orders, court martials, guard duty, and other events, and are similar to what the U.S Navy calls the "rough log".

These materials were among the contents of Dr. William Libbey's library, which was donated to Clark University in 1928 following his passing.

Portions from the first orderly book were transcribed across several issues of The Goddard Biblio Log (1971-1982), a publication for Friends of the Robert Hutchings Goddard Library. This publication has been digitized and can be found here. Transcriptions of the first orderly book appear in the Spring 1972 issue and can be found at the end of any issue containing transcription.
