Abstract
This thesis explores my artistic journey of creating work that centers on personal identity and the complexities of history and representation. Through research and creative practice, I have moved away from making art for an external viewer, turning to a deeper internal exploration of my lived experiences. Focusing on the color indigo as a personal and historical symbol, I challenge conventional portrayals of race in art, particularly those rooted in Western ideals. By reflecting on modernism, the human figure, portraiture, and the use of color, I articulate how my art dialogues with history while expressing the freedom to define my narrative. This work responds to societal norms, placing the marginalized in positions of empowerment and representation.
