Abstract

The birth of the Dutch Republic had a few remarkable features Not only did the seven united provinces in the northwest of the European mainland defeat the powerful army of Habsburg Spain, but it was one of the rare cases in history when a new country manifested itself immediately as an economic and political powerhouse Perhaps the Dutch case was even unique One of the factors that enabled this rapid rise was silver It is my goal in this paper to show how economic need and patriotic zeal combined to produce an obsession with “Spanish” silver in the first half of the seventeenth century
