Abstract
Beginning excerpt: "In the spring of 1831, when James Monroe reported from his daughter’s home in New York City that he planned to sell his only remaining land in Virginia, his old compatriot James Madison was heartbroken. Despite Madison’s close knowledge of Monroe’s declining health and dire financial predicament, his friend’s decision to sever his last connection to the Old Dominion apparently came as a shock. In truth, Monroe’s ties to New York were longstanding and hardly incidental."
