Abstract

Francis Cecil Sumner was the first Black man to receive a PhD in psychology. His mentor, G. Stanley Hall, personally chaired this dissertation. Sumner became known as the "Father of Black Psychology". He went on to teach at Wilberforce University and West Virginia State College, and then chaired the psychology department at Howard University from 1930 to 1954.
