Methodology:
The establishment of this archive adds to existing testimonials making more of them accessible to the public and ensuring that the story is preserved. It is the goal of the Banyamulenge community representatives like the GRSF, to pursue international justice for this massacre. This archive offers a basis for further research on this event.
Building this archive required conducting interviews with living survivors of the Gatumba massacre. Making contact with survivors was facilitated through the Dr. Davey’s research network and the Gatumba Refugee Survivors Foundation. Once contact was made, one of the several interviewers in this project worked with individuals to schedule a structured interview, most often via video chat and when unavailable, via telephone. As part of the interview process, participants were provided with consent forms and agreed to be involved as a research participant.
Many survivors are currently living in various locations across Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, United Kingdom, United States. Most interviewed for this archive were located in the United States. Survivors are interviewed in English or with the support of a translator.
The aim of the questions was to gain a more complete understanding of a survivor’s experience before, during, and after the event. We wanted to know how the violence directly affected survivors and their families and what the long term consequences are. A total of 14 questions were asked and some were as follows: What challenges did you/your family experience immediately after the violence? How do you feel justice should be or should have been imparted? To what degree do you feel this has been or will be done? In the 18 years following the massacre, how has your life been different because of what happened? What has stayed the same? What has helped you to heal?
This research was carried out under approval from Clark University's Institutional Review Board, protocol number 243.
