Abstract

Paul F. Keene's stature as a much-revered teacher in Philadelphia and Bucks County, Pennsylvania, from the 1950s through the 1990s has somewhat obscured the legacy of his art. Over the decades of his career as a painter and printmaker, he explored the experience of being Black in the United States in works that defy easy categorization: he himself called them “figurative abstractions.”
