Abstract
One book in a series comprising three regional studies and one overview volume, the nine papers focus on farmer-participatory approaches to agricultural innovation initiated by NGOs and state institutions in Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. Each volume explores how good NGOs are at promoting technological innovation and addressing constraints to change in peasant culture, how effective they are at strengthening grassroots and local organisations, and how donor pressures are influencing NGOs and their links to the state. The authors organise their chapters around two themes: state-society relations and the design of agricultural development, and present the case-study material on which they are based in annexes. -M.Amos
