Description
Translated publication of the five lectures, collectively titled "The Origin and Development of Psychoanalysis", given by Sigmund Freud at Clark University's 1909 Conference. Freud adapted his lectures into written form, where they were translated by Harry W. Chase, a Fellow in Psychology. Freud then revised the translation. This process can be partly traced in the correspondence series of this collection, in the letters between G. Stanley Hall and Freud. These lectures mark the formal introduction of his theories to the United States. They are most commonly known in print as “Five Lectures on Psycho-Analysis”.
These lectures are part of the larger publication Lectures and Addresses Delivered Before the Departments of Psychology and Pedagogy in Celebration of the Twentieth Anniversary of the Opening of Clark University. The entirety of that work can be found here.
Clark University's 1909 conference, which took place September 6th through September 19th, was a celebration of the institution's twentieth anniversary featuring lectures, discussions, and demonstrations from prominent scientists and scholars across the physical, biological, and social sciences. The conference is most notable for the participation of Sigmund Freud who, along with Carl Jung, would take their first and only trip to America to attend.
