Abstract
Professor James Smethurst, Department of African-American Studies, University of Massachusetts, Amherst delivered this lecture. Smethurst’s most recent book is "The Black Arts Movement: Literary Nationalism in the 1960s and 1970s," a work that is arguably the definitive study on the most radical critique of American racial injustice in the history of the United States to have emerged through literary expression. So effective was the Black Arts Movement in this respect that, as an extension of though Black Power Movement, it would inspire the development of other liberational causes such as the black feminist movement, the Asian American movement, the Native American movement and the gay liberation movement.
