Abstract
This chapter reveals two distinct threads of relationship between Haitian migrants and Guadeloupeans. On the one hand, Haiti and Haitian immigrants face huge amount of derision and hostility in the hands of local Guadeloupans, while on the other hand, Guadeloupean history and culture has greatly been affected by Haitians. This chapter talks about different literatures displaying an Haitian influence on Guadeloupean culture while at the same time portraying a demarcation of the Haitian character in Guadeloupean society. Divisions between Haitians and Guadeloupeans have been presented quite clearly in some literary texts. These texts reflect both preconceptions prevailing between both the groups against each other as well as confrontations instigated by the popular media. The central point of these texts is the prevalence of anti-Haitian sentiment among Guadeloupeans.
