Elyse Semerdjian, Whitman College

Abstract

This chapter examines the history of Judayda Quarter, a district of Aleppo produced by both Muslim and Christian endowments. Using Arabic, Armenian, and Ottoman Turkish sources, the paper examines the particular role that early modern Armenian immigration played in the development of the quarter's Armenian institution starting in the fifteenth century.
