Document Type
Book Chapter
Abstract
This chapter examines the typical workload of an academic in the three areas usually evaluated for a successful case for tenure: teaching, research, and service. It situates these arenas within the broader context of institutions of higher education, using the United States as an illustration. Through describing different types of institutions, the chapter points to the wide range of practices and expectations of the professoriate in different contexts. Finally, it draws on personal experience and anecdotes to offer practical advice on developing teaching, research, and service in the early years of a tenure clock, working toward a successful tenure case.
