Embracing the not yet: Emerging teacher voices in the elementary on-site seminar

Document Type

Book Chapter

Abstract

This chapter introduces the elementary-level version of the on-site seminar, describes the conceptualization of it as a contextualized learning space, and illustrates what the seminar seems to support but also what it reveals regarding the development of Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) identities, voices, and practice. It considers how the on-site seminar has helped to understand the development of teacher critical consciousness, reflection, and ethical stance. The chapter describes the on-site seminar as vocalized reflective practice: the space where MAT praxis is voiced, reflected, and evaluated through their ongoing exploration of what it means to build a community of effective and caring urban teachers that learn to trust, collaborate, and voice their teaching and their practice. MATs use the personal and professional connections they have built with each other to formulate more complex discussions involving their mentor teacher’s classroom work and challenges of practice.
